Pear Shape Diamond Tutorial

This is a line-up of diamonds presented to a client interested in a custom pear shape engagement ring with this size and quality in mind. Now before we go further, options 1 (1.86 ct D-SI1) and option 3 (1.97 F-SI1) are diamonds we would NEVER recommend to a client and were only shown in this line-up to help them get a clear understanding of what to AVOID in a pear shape diamond. Why you might ask? The answer comes down strictly to the cut and these two diamonds fail the cut test for different reasons. The 1.86 carat D-SI1 may look large at first glance because it is longer than any of the other three stones, however it is too long and starts to loose its teardrop outline; the edges are too flat and parallel as well. The ratio of this diamond (length divided by width) is somewhere in the 1.7 range which is outside the acceptable range for pear shape diamonds where you would usually want to target something in the 1.5:1 to 1.65:1 range. On the other hand, the 1.97 F-SI1 looks terribly small for its size; it is a very deep diamond and although it does weight almost 2 carats, it gives you the face-up appearance of a diamond around 1.50 carats so you will not be getting what you pay for.
Finally, the two other stones are both great options; they have the ideal teardrop outline that you want from a pear shape diamond and both have excellent measurements and combinations of color/clarity. Typically for a 2 carat pear shape diamond you would want something at least 11mm in length while maintaining the 1.5:1 to 1.65:1 ratio range. This will ensure a beautiful stone that faces up like its carat weight would suggest
